Germany Takes Gold
26 Aug 2004 20:05

 ARGENTINA 1 CHINA 0

Luciana Aymar, who else, smashed in a last minute goal to help Argentina to a narrow 1-0 victory in a hard fought clash against China in the bronze medal play off. Just as the contest seemed set to move in to extra time after both teams had struggled to create clear cut scoring chances, the majestic midfielder collected the ball outside the circle and following some deft stickwork unleashed an upstoppable shot past Yali Nie in China's goal.

GERMANY 2 HOLLAND 1

Germany produced one of the major upsets in Olympic hockey when they upset the highly fancied Dutch team to win 2-1 and capture their first ever gold medal to the delight of their huge band of vocal suppporters. Taking a 2-0 lead in to the break, the Germans were forced to withstand a fierce onslaught from their opponents after the break but despite pulling a goal back the European Champions found it impossible to find a way past resolute defending and another superb display in goal by Louisa Walter.
