USA Men to travel to China
14 May 2007 15:24
Members of the newly-selected USA Men's National Team will continue its preparations for this summer's Pan American Games when the team travels to Lanzhou City, China for a four-nation tournament with Egypt, Japan and host country China.
The tournament marks the final international competition for the U.S. men prior to the Pan American Games, 15-29 July 2007 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The winner of the Pan Am Games earns the continent's automatic berth in the 2008 Olympic Games.
Selected at USA Field Hockey's National Championships in early May, coach Nick Conway's U.S. team for the tournament includes Rinku Bhamber (Simi Valley, Calif.), Patrick Cota (Camarillo, Calif.), Remco Couwenbergh (Northridge, Calif.), Jed Cunningham (Moorpark, Calif.), Jon Ginolfi (Moorpark, Calif.), Mick Harner (Hanover, Pa.), Patrick Harris (Moorpark, Calif.), Shawn Hindy (Westlake Village, Calif.), Binh Hoang (Westlake Village, Calif.), Danny Jordan (Camarillo, Calif.), Jarred Martin (Saratoga Springs, Calif.), Shawn Nakamura (Camarillo, Calif.), Arjan Reyatt (Brea, Calif.), Ramandeep Sandhu (Camarillo, Calif.), Brian Schledorn (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and goalkeepers Jeb Saez (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Jason Wellings (Thousand Oaks, Calif.).
At the tournament, the U.S. men will join a field of up-and-coming international teams including 2006 world Cup team Japan, 2004 Olympic Games participant Egypt and 2008 Olympic host China. Japan equaled its best-ever World Cup finish in 2006 with a 9th place showing in Monchengladbach while Egypt placed 12th at the Olympic Games in making only its second Olympic appearance. China will make its first Olympic appearance as the host nation in 2008, but the team has climbed up the international rankings to the No. 18 position just below Japan (12) and Egypt (15). China placed 7th at the recent eight-team Sultan Azlan Shah Cup Tournament and earned a 4-2 win over Canada in the 7th/8th place match. The USA is currently ranked at the No. 27 spot.
The China tournament will also present the USA with opponents rarely seen on the USA schedule. The USA has met China only once in a 4-2 loss at the World Cup Qualifier Preliminary Tournament in 1996 and has seen Egypt only three times including twice (both 2-1 losses) at the 2001 World Cup Qualifying Tournament. The USA is
0-2-4 in all-time matches against Japan including four straight draws. The two teams last met in 1994 with the most significant matches between the two nations played at the 1932 and 1936 Olympic Games. Japan won both Olympic matches, 9-2 in Los Angeles and 5-1 in Berlin.
