It became obvious that Matthias Witthaus was destined for great things when he debuted for Germany as a 16-year-old at the 1999 European Championships and helped defeat arch rivals the Netherlands 8-7 in a penalty shoot-out to take the gold medal.
Since that time he has been part of gold medal winning teams at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, the 2007 Champions Trophy and the 2003 European Championships.
A sharp and clever player with a real eye for goal, the Crefelder HTC forward has studied sport science at the University of Cologne. Born in Oberhausen, he relaxes by spending time with his friends and brothers and watching films.
